About me

Alenka Vujkovac

“Some people only listen; some of us can also hear.”

Life is full of unexpected turns and surprises. It has been no different for me.

I have always been interested in the human soul and in what happens within us, and I have long carried a deep wish to stand by people in their less beautiful moments too. Even so, my path first led me to study economics at the Faculty of Economics in Ljubljana. After graduating, I spent many years working in the unforgiving conditions of the corporate world, in a range of roles. For fifteen years I also worked a great deal with people – as a manager, a motivator, and a member and leader of project teams. I came to know many of the struggles people go through because of ever harder working conditions and personal problems.

Education

In 2007 I learned that it was possible to study psychotherapy in Slovenia at the Faculty of Psychotherapy Science of Sigmund Freud University in Ljubljana. In 2008 I enrolled in the propaedeutic programme, and two years later in specialist training in logotherapy under the renowned psychiatrist and logotherapist Dr Cvijeta Pahljina. In October 2013 I successfully completed my studies with a thesis in the field of logotherapy.

In 2022 I was awarded the European Certificate of Psychotherapy, issued by the European Association for Psychotherapy, and in 2025 the Slovenian Certificate of Psychotherapy, issued by Slovenska krovna zveza za psihoterapijo (SKZP). Since 2023 I have also been a member of the committee that awards these certificates, one of the bodies of SKZP.

In 2025 I became a training therapist and supervisor for logotherapy students at the Institute for Logotherapy (Inštitut za logoterapijo).

My own experience of therapy

During my studies I also gained my own personal experience of psychotherapy, which is one of the requirements for working successfully with clients. I have completed eighty hours of group psychotherapy and more than two hundred hours of individual psychotherapy in two different approaches. I still regularly attend my own therapy, and I continue to explore different approaches through the eyes of a client as well.

Placements and voluntary work

As part of my studies I completed various placements and voluntary work with different groups of people in need – including work with older people at the Fužine care home. I helped set up the Psihofon helpline for people in distress, and worked with the Medical Students' Association on the V odsevu (In Reflection) project, which raises awareness of mental illness and works to reduce its stigma. In January 2014 I started helping to establish the Psychotherapy Outpatient Clinic within the faculty, where I worked as a pro bono therapist and took part in regular group supervision. I was also a member of a discussion club where psychotherapists, psychiatrists and psychologists met regularly for several years.

Today

I work in private psychotherapy practice and also collaborate with Inštitut Stopinje, with whom we run various projects in the field of mental health. Since 2019 we have been running the Stopinje v svobodo (Footsteps to Freedom) project at Ig Prison, where we offer individual and group therapy to women prisoners and remand detainees and organise events to strengthen mental health in prison. The project is also supported by the Ministry of Health.

Supervision and ethics

I work under regular supervision. For many years my mentor was Dr Cvijeta Pahljina; after her death, her place was taken by the psychiatrist Dr Borut Škodlar. Within the Institute for Logotherapy I also take part in regular group supervision and in supervisor training. I fully respect and work in accordance with the Code of Ethics of Slovenska krovna zveza za psihoterapijo and the Personal Data Protection Act (ZVOP-2).

Beyond work

I am a curious person who loves good books, the sea, photography, travel and my two grown-up children. And who is genuinely interested in people and their life stories.

The photographs on this page are my own.
