Workplace counselling

All employees have quick and anonymous access, through their organisation, to a professional who can help them in a range of crisis situations – whether related to work or to personal circumstances.

We live in a time marked by haste in every area of life. Globalisation, digitalisation and ever-growing demands have made the pace of change at work and in our personal lives almost unmanageable. People are adaptable, but sometimes we reach a point where we simply cannot go on, or no longer know how. Some bury themselves even deeper in work, some fall ill, others seek professional help – but in any case the consequences can be serious.

Abroad, this kind of support for employees has been established practice for some years, while in Slovenia it is still in its infancy. It is also one of the measures for the Family-Friendly Enterprise certificate (Družini prijazno podjetje).

What it covers

  • psychological support with stress, health problems, anxiety, a poor self-image and feelings of meaninglessness
  • advice on dealing with difficult employees
  • counselling in conflict situations, and mediation
  • advising managers on communicating under strained conditions – redundancies, reassignments, pressure to reduce staff
  • counselling on employees' career development
  • counselling on ethics and dignity at work
  • balancing personal and working time
  • psychological support after critical incidents such as workplace accidents

How it works

Together with the employee, we explore the problem and help them look at it from a distance. The path leads to the realisation that they have more options than they imagine – that the freedom and responsibility to act are in their own hands, and that they are not merely a powerless victim of circumstances. I accompany the employee as they discover their way to a solution, supporting and encouraging them.

Three conditions it cannot work without

  1. Complete anonymity

Employees must trust that the help will remain one hundred per cent confidential – both what is said and who is involved. Without this, it never takes root.

  2. Quick availability

Ideally, the counsellor is available in suitable premises within the company, or at least nearby, on set days and at set times.

  3. Knowing the environment

Appropriate knowledge and training are a prerequisite, and familiarity with the employees' working environment greatly increases the effectiveness of counselling.

What it brings to the employer

From 2008 to 2016, the European Central Bank worked with an external counsellor in this field at its headquarters in Frankfurt. The analysis after the collaboration ended showed exactly what I describe above.
